Career Education - Social Work and Human Services

About

The Social Work and Human Services program at Berkeley City College helps launch case workers, navigators, behavioral specialists, community health workers, case coordinators, and population health specialists into satisfying careers. If your interest and passion are in transforming communities impacted by health disparity, intergenerational trauma, systemic exclusion, or violence, you are in the right place. Our graduates take positions in local government programs, non-profits serving at-risk populations, educational settings, residential settings, and advocacy organizations.

Our offerings are Career Education focused, and also stack towards various degrees. Our students earn while they learn, and most are employed while they pursue their academic development. Take a few classes to enhance your skill set (and earn a pay bump!), take a few more to earn a certificate, or build a plan for an Associates Degree with our dedicated counseling staff. Complete courses in the evenings or online while you continue working. Imagine yourself transferring to a 4-year school. Dream that big dream of a Master’s in Social Work or Public Health.

We can help you get there!

Certificates and Degrees

Social Work and Human Services Paraprofessional Certificate of Achievement

The program provides a comprehensive curriculum for paraprofessionals in social work and human services. It is designed to help California meet the statewide challenges and the rapidly expanding need for health, public, and human service/social worker paraprofessionals. Students’ training will allow them to become well-rounded employees who are able to participate as team members in health and human service agencies and social work settings. The program is also designed to align with various transfer programs for students who wish to continue to an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences or the Associate Degrees for Transfer in either Psychology or Sociology.

Bridge to Community Health Worker Careers Certificate of Completion

The bridge to community health worker careers certificate is a 105 hour non-credit certificate option designed for students who plan to pursue a career as a community health worker (CHW). The certificate enables students to gain exposure to various career options as a community health worker and will develop skills necessary to enter volunteer/internship positions or paraprofessional employment in the field. Many students will wish to continue their education through Berkeley City College’s Social Work and Human Services credit certificate program and or a variety of Associate Degrees for Transfer (Psychology, Sociology, etc.).
