Volunteering
- Step Up Tutoring – Step Up Tutoring is a grassroots movement of young people providing free online tutoring and mentorship to under-resourced elementary school students. Their relationship with LAUSD schools provides infinite students looking for help. With over 400k students in LAUSD, their goal is to serve 25,000 students within the next 5 years. Volunteering is currently online which offers a flexible schedule, it’s an easy and meaningful way to support at-risk youth. Their leadership team is filled with young students and young alumni. - English in Action – English-in-Action (EIA) is part of a nationwide program in which volunteers meet with Berkeley students, visiting scholars and their partners, students from adult schools, and local community colleges, on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, to increase participants’ competency in the English language, by practicing conversational English once a week. (Continuous)
- YWCA Communications Team – Join the YWCA Comms Team, a group of dedicated volunteers who are interested in advancing racial and gender justice in our communities. Our team shares the YWCA message of eliminating racism and empowering women across social media manages the YWCA blog and maintains the YWCA website. No experience is necessary! The role provides leadership development and in-house training for managing communications in a digital space.
- Oakland School Volunteers Program – The Oakland Public Education Fund is a program that has volunteers supporting students in Oakland Unified School District classrooms. As an ongoing volunteer, you will spend an hour a week (or more!) at an Oakland Public School. See Transfer and Career Center for more information. (Continuous)
- Berkeley Mutual Aid – Berkeley Mutual Aid is a volunteer group of neighbors helping neighbors by meeting basic needs for isolated individuals such as grocery shopping, prescription pick up, social support, and wildfire evacuation planning. They match volunteers into pairs for ongoing weekly support, and they need your help. You can plan around your unique schedule and make new social connections in the process. Sign up today! - Reading Partners Oakland – Reading Partners mobilizes communities to provide our students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade. They rely on community volunteers to work with our students for one-on-one literacy tutoring. - Sidekicks: Adaptive Programming – Teen Sidekicks are truly committed and enjoy working closely with special needs students, befriending them, sharing lunch and activities, or helping them successfully integrate into mainstream programs. Teen Sidekicks attend a 2-hour orientation/training to learn about special needs and the basic principles of behavior management. Sidekicks are paired with a camper with special needs and will meet with their camper buddy and a family member before the camp begins to better understand the individual child’s needs. Together, they attend a Piedmont Recreation Department (PRD) summer camp (1-week), creating lasting memories and having the time of their lives. Applicants must be at least 14 years of age by June 5, 2024, or entering 9th grade. After completing a successful interview, teens must attend an orientation/training on May 1, 2024 at 6:00 pm, and commit to volunteering at least one week during the summer. Community service hours are available upon request. Volunteers may be eligible to receive a letter of recommendation. Experience working with elementary-aged children is a bonus, but not required. - NAF Future Scholars at UC Berkeley hiring temporary residential advisors to support their in-person summer programming on UC Berkeley’s campus this summer. Any current undergrad/ grad or recently graduated students who may be looking for short-term summer work are eligible. They are not required to have any STEM or college access background, just an enthusiasm for community-building and a love for education! - Climate Corps Education Outside – We are currently hiring for full-time AmeriCorps Fellows that will deliver hands-on ecoliteracy and inquiry-based science lessons in school gardens to K-5 students in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. They independently supervise groups of up to 20 students, facilitates learning, and works with other members of the after-school program team to meet the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and physical needs of all students.
